A self-described “late bloomer,” FRIEDA LEE passed up a recording contract while in college to become a music educator, a vocation that was her calling for decades. When she accidentally fell back into singing, she continued her day job while performing around town. Today, Frieda is one of Chicago’s most widely appreciated vocalists with a voice that sounds better than ever. Introduced at an early age to the vocal styles of the jazz greats–Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Anita O’Day and Nancy Wilson–Frieda embraced the music of Gershwin, Porter, Kern, and Ellington. Today her performances are a virtual excursion through the great American musical repertoire of adult contemporary music and mainstream jazz. She is a regular big band vocalist for the John Burnett Orchestra and Jeff Lindberg’s Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Frieda is backed up by MIKE LOGAN, piano; BERNARD SCAVELLA, sax; CHUCK WEBB, bass; and CHARLES HEATH, drums.
