Henry Johnson Contemporary Jazz Quintet

11:30pm–12:30am | Rockefeller Chapel

HENRY JOHNSON CONTEMPORARY JAZZ QUINTET (CJQ). Although brought up on the music of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, it was the sound of guitarist Wes Montgomery that turned Henry Johnson to jazz. Henry toured with Jack McDuff and later with luminaries Sonny Stitt, Hank Crawford, Ramsey Lewis, and Joe Williams. His recording debut, You’re the One, was first on the charts, won a five-star rating in Downbeat, and was nominated for a Grammy. Henry has since recorded eight CDs under his own name and can be heard both playing guitar and singing with Nancy Wilson on his CD, Organic. Completing his Quintet are Peter Roothaan, sax; Frank Russell, bass guitar; Robert Irving III, piano; and Robert Gates, drums.
