Jazz guitarist PETER LERNER grew up in multicultural, musically diverse Hyde Park. His earliest musical influence was his mother, who played guitar and sang folk songs to him. Peter attended Chicago’s American Conservatory of Music and has worked as a professional musician, composer, and recording artist ever since. He is a member of the music faculty of Columbia College where he teaches jazz guitar and improvisation and has performed with such luminaries as Ramsey Lewis, Lee Konitz, and Orbert Davis. His first CD, South Side, was nominated for Chicago Music Award Best Jazz Album/CD; his critically acclaimed Cry for Peace ranked 25 in the national jazz album chart. With three albums as a leader, Peter has also recorded and toured as a sideman with Ramsey Lewis, Lee Konitz, Eric Alexander, Victor Lewis, Mike LeDonne, David Hazeltine, B.B. King, Bootsy Collins, and Gladys Knight, among many other notable artists. Von Freeman commented that “Peter has a real presence on the guitar. . . .He gets better every time I hear him.” And Larry Coryell notes of Peter, “He plays his ass off. He’s a great guitarist.” Peter will be giving solo performances.
