For more than a decade, Chicago’s Twin Talk has been steadily drifting away from the conventions of the saxophone trio. While reedist Dustin Laurenzi, bassist-singer Katie Ernst, and drummer Andrew Green are all deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, they’ve spent their time together on the band stage making their music more elastic, spontaneous, and open and embracing new inspirations without stifling the improvisational heart of their work. Twin Talk uses live performances as opportunities to stretch their repertoire, expand on composed material, and ditch set lists in favor of calling tunes on the fly.

The band’s latest record, Twin Talk Live, was recorded at Shirk Studios in Chicago and focuses on the spirit of the group’s live performances. "This record captures the band’s live-show dynamic in the recording studio (hence the album title): playful, free, groovy, venturing into the unknown,” Laurenzi explains. “Instead of recording track-by-track, we recorded mini-sets of our songs and improvised within and around the composed material, as we would during a live show.”

The musicians:

Dustin Laurenzi — tenor saxophone
Katie Ernst — bass, voice
Andrew Green — drums
