“Hypocrisy of Justice: Sights and Sounds from the Black Metropolis” Performances and Symposium are happening on October 7th and 8th, 2022.

The Hyde Park Jazz Festival, the Reva & David Logan Center for the Arts, and the University of Chicago Presents are pleased to present a collaborative commission to Dana Hall and Cheryl Lynn Bruce to extend and further develop their 2015 project with visual artist Kerry James Marshall titled “Hypocrisy of Justice: Sights and Sounds from the Black Metropolis.” Hypocrisy of Justice explores inequities within systems and institutions, along with lived experiences of confinement, redemption, hope, and home. In addition to two performances by Dana Hall’s Sextet with special guest actor Malcom Banks, there will be a free day-long symposium on October 8th. The project is inspired by Richard Wright’s 1940 novel, Native Son.

With continued episodes and patterns of social, economic, political, and racial injustices in our communities, as well as the many ways that the historic worldwide pandemic of 2020 has exposed and reinforced the systemic inequalities many of us endure, I am further looking forward to raising awareness of these and other issues by engaging in conversation with scholars, critical thinkers, activists, and other artists in a convening about the ways these unjust systems intersect. It is my hope that these conversations and concerts will inspire and mobilize actions toward a more just society for all.
